east village bathing futures

From public pools in the east river to imported immigrant bathing traditions to queer bathhouse culture, NY’s East Village has a rich tradition of bathing.
East Village Bathing Futures is an adaptive reuse proposal for a post-fossil fuels New York City on the site of Con-Ed East River Generating Station’s parking lot. In phase 1, utility trucks (currently parked on the site) would be converted into saunas and become mobile community gathering spaces. In phase 2, the site would be converted into a bathhouse, providing a grand space for public gathering on the East River Waterfront. The landscaping also serves both as a gathering space facing the sunset over the neighborhood and as a flood water management system.

The project culminated in an exhibition at the Bullet Space where neighborhood residents’ interests were peaked about the posibilities for public bathing’s return to everyday life in the East Village.
